Visiting NoDS artist in residence Eliza Fernand provided some insights on the correlations between geology and quilt making.  Eliza showed some Amish quilt patterns, noting the references to everyday events and natural phenomena in their names.  (Barn raising, Stairway to heaven, Streak of Lightning to name a few.)  Visual parallels were drawn to the sedimentary layering of minerals that form the earth’s crust, the meeting up of fault lines and the formation of mountains…We finished up by making our own paper patchwork from hand drawn patterns…I have been seeing quilt patterns in the streets all around town ever since. Fascinating and fun! Thank you Eliza!
